Hello everyone and welcome. Today I am going to share with you how to take creative photographs of yourself. I have added tips on how I stay creative and avoid or get out of a creative block.
As a painter it is very important to me to continue to think creatively. However, there are only so many ideas that I can access before I run out of them. So much like a car, as I have mentioned before, I need to refuel. So to do this I have a number of activities I like to do. One of them is to take photographs out and about. Read on to learn how I take photographs of myself.
Now when I combine this with creativity that is just a huge bonus and so much fun. I also find that when I change my creative activity this will also refuel my creativity for the creative outlet I was running out of ideas for. (I hope this makes sense, if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments or email me email@example.com)
So for example if I am feeling a little stuck with ideas for painting, I will quite often sit down and crochet for a little while especially if I am working on a project that does not require much concentration, so it acts as a relaxation activity and lets me be creative without draining my creative ideas. Giving me the well needed distraction and rest from painting. Of course there are many other distracting and relaxing activities such as reading, luxuriating in a warm bubble bath by candle light etc, you get the idea 🙂
Today I would like to invite you to come along with me while I go do a self photography shoot in the Jedi costume I made for my son one Halloween, a couple of years ago; however he did not want to keep it so I did, it is now mine, my precious lol ( did you get the reference there?). Well, it is a pretty cool costume and I am a huge fan of Star Wars (what can I say I’m a bit of a SciFi geek at heart lol) My video will be available at the end of this post but first there are a few things I thought you might find helpful that I was not able to show in the video due to forgetting my DSLR battery so it was not so easy to actually film the full process and take photos, which was my original idea.
You do not have to be an expert in photography to take good self photographs. It is the timer setting on your camera that is important, unless you have a shutter remote. Oh and be brave to experiment with different poses. On my DSLR I can actually control my camera through my phone and do continuous shooting (that’s a lesson for another day). Using my mobile phone to control my DSLR I can be sure I will be in focus and in frame. However, on this photo shoot I did not have the use of my Canon 750D. Instead I had to be smart about my shots using my point and shoot camera so there will not be any complicated camera settings to explain.
In this shot, using a tripod, I used the trees to line up the camera to know where to walk to be in shot. To be on the safe side I also made sure I had plenty space either side of where I was going to walk so I could crop the photo if I had to. I set the timer to 10 seconds then “ran” to the furthest away spot I could (while counting to 10 in my head) then walked towards the camera. It must have been funny to watch me lol
On this and the next photograph I used the opening/doorway on the structure to know where to stand to be in shot. Again, I set the timer to 10 seconds got into place and began to move about until I heard the camera take the shot. The key to getting a really good shot is to take loads of photographs and pick out the best.
So you see it is really very simple to take photographs of yourself using a tripod and timer setting. Of course you do not have to use a tripod, you can get creative using fences or walls to sit the camera on to line up a shot, however, a tripod does make life so much easier. I would not have been able to get this shot as there was nowhere to sit my camera. But in the previous shot I could have sat the camera on the concrete structure to get the view of the path between the trees.
So now you can see how easy it is, why don’t you give it a go? I would love to connect with you on social media so I can see your self photographs. You can follow me on my facebook fan page, on instagram or twitter speak soon T
